Subcontractor
PronunciationSUB-kon-trak-ter
Definition
A person or company hired by a primary contractor to perform specific tasks or services for a larger project. The subcontractor reports to the primary contractor rather than the end client.
Where you hear it
In project management discussions, contract negotiations, or when a freelancer needs additional expertise to meet a project deadline.
Examples
I am hiring a designer as a subcontractor to help with the UI elements of this project.
The contract allows me to use a subcontractor for the backend development if necessary.
Common mistake
Assuming the client has a direct legal or professional relationship with the subcontractor, when in fact the primary contractor is solely responsible for the subcontractor's work.
